Lisa Buchanan

Available Works

Utilizing a lyrical line and bold palette, Lisa Buchanan produces paintings which at first appear organic and haphazard. They are, however, intentionally and subtly structured, inspired by what the artist describes as a tension between chaos and order. Buchanan’s imagery remains a consistent mix of line, pattern, and color, but it runs the gamut from anxious and frenetic to calm and sensuous.

Last year Buchanan completed a 66 painting commission for the Auberge Resort in Calistoga, California. The project involved large and fully realized paintings, not multiples or sketches. In order to create this vast number of works, she locked herself into a highly focussed state, allowing for intuitive decisions and nearly eliminating the need to carefully consider her every move. The result was a wholly-complete body of work which had a freshness that she found invigorating. For the paintings in Escape, she has continued to build on that experience by embarking upon a body of work which captures that energy while maintaining an undercurrent of firm control.

After nearly 20 years of solo exhibitions, Buchanan continues to be an important and vital presence in contemporary art. Her work, constantly evolving, remains relevant and trendsetting. This is her first exhibition with Davidson Contemporary.
