Der Weisskunig (The White King):
The Life and Reign of Emporer Maximilian I (r. 1493-1519)

Woodcuts, c.1509-1518 after Hans Burgkmair (1473-1531) & Leonhard Beck (c.1480-1542)

The Antique Print Department will feature woodcuts by two German artists from the Northern Renaissance Hans Burgkmair and Leonhard Beck. Over a hundred prints from Der Weisskunig (The White King), tell an idealized, self commissioned, illustrated history of the reign of Maximilian I. An intelligent leader, Maximilian I intended Der Weisskunig, and other commissioned works, to serve as imperial propaganda, immortalizing the empire and its Habsburg rulers (of which Maximilian was one) and in a manner purposefully similar to that of the ancient Romans and the knights of Arthurian legends. These images reveal late medieval and early Renaissance court life (if somewhat romanticized) in richly detailed costumes, housewares, architecture and weaponry. Designed for a 16th century understanding of perspective and composition, the interior spaces, courtyards, battlegrounds, and landscapes are constructed for maximum effect.
