Marlene Bauer’s paintings are a balancing act between abstraction and representation, formal concerns and whimsy, color and line. A native of the Pacific Northwest, Bauer interprets the landscape and architecture in a very personal way yet with the eye of a modernist: when she depicts houses, for instance, they become simplified forms, visual icons, and yet they stand for a deeply personal sense of place, of home. The recognizable elements in her paintings - trees, buildings, hills - are rarely rooted in a traditional notion of landscape. Instead, curved lines and broad swaths of color swirl around and overlap each other, evoking the subconscious, and pull each painting away from literal interpretation.
Marlene Bauer has been exhibiting at Davidson Galleries since 1996. Her work is included in numerous public and private collections including the Portland Art Museum, Safeco Corporation, and the Microsoft Collection. In 2004 she completed a commissioned work for SeaTac International Airport.
