John James Audubon (American, 1785 - 1851)

Naturalist Prints

Outdoorsman, orinthologist, and artist, John James Audubon has been universally recognized as the greatest illustrator of American wildlife. Breaking from the tradition of depicting static animals in sterile backgrounds, Audubon illustrated birds and fourlegged animals in lively motion and in realistic environments. Audubon’s most celebrated achievement was the publication of his oversized portfolio of the Birds of America published in the 1830’s. This work was later revised and the smaller version, known as the Royal Octavo Edition, included 500 plates in lithographs translated from his color paintings.
