Throughout history we have sought in nature glimpses of the sublime. In this pursuit we have looked to artists to capture and recreate nature’s exalted and noble characteristics. English print artist Norman Ackroyd, following in the footsteps of the great Romantic artist, J.M.W. Turner, realizes this estimable goal in his powerful yet sensitive plein air etchings. Ackroyd’s atmospheric views pulse with a sketch-like vibrancy that is accomplished by his devotion to truthful observation and the materials and methods used. He refuses to be encumbered by the demands of the etching process; but instead, takes with him into the hills and fields plate, ink and acid. He gives to the etching medium a remarkable freedom that results in images of immediacy and freshness. Ackroyd evokes Turner’s Romantic spirit, but in his plein air approach he leaves the confines of the studio and the Romantic concern with imaginative ideals. Ackroyd goes directly to the land and to the plate to seek and find the sublime.
